TONERS
Today’s spotlight is toners. This has probably made the biggest impact i my skincare routine, I have actually only been using toners for probably 3 years now, so I managed to go through my teenage years without using this and that may have been a huge mistake.
What’s the point of a toner?
Toner rehydrates your skin and removes chlorine and minerals in tap water: As our water is treated with chlorine (the same thing in swimming pools), you don’t really want that sitting on your skin as I know it is an irritant to quite a lot of people with sensitive skin. Using a toner after you’ve cleansed/wash your face with rehydrate it and remove the chlorine and minerals found in tap water that could irritate your skin.
Toner restores your pH balance: Some cleansers/soaps/face wash might slightly dry your skin out after you use it, by using a toner this will help restore the pH balance, ready for you to layer up the next lot of skincare products.
Toner can enhance your skincare routine: I never used a toner until 3 years ago and I can honestly say, since I’ve been using a toner, it has really helped my moisturiser and serum work on my skin so much better. You would want to avoid any toner that contains cosmetic alcohol, especially those with sensitive skin will find that the ‘clean’ feeling is actually the toner drying out your skin.I also found this out when I was introduced to the Clinique 3-step programme. I am meant to be step 2 but after trying out the clarifying lotion number 2, I was breaking out with pimple spots and getting red rashes on my face (it was DEFINITELY not a nice look). I went back to the counter assistant and because Clinique have a 100% guarantee no allergy policy, if the product doesn’t work after the recommended time, they will replace it for you, even if its half full. (Disclaimer: this is what a Clinique consultant told me at my local store, I do not know if this is available in other stores therefore, please check with your Clinique consultant) My Clinique consultant replaced my clarifying lotion number 2 with their mild clarifying lotion that does not contain cosmetic alcohol and this has worked wonders!
I did get the Clinique clarifying as a present but the toner I used religiously before is Vichy Purete Thermale Toner. I am obsessed with this toner, its a hydrating toner but doesn’t over hydrate that the oily parts of my face become even more oily. Its probably the best toner that I’ve used.
When I talk to people about their skincare routine, many people do not use toner in their routine and continually complain about over oiliness or dehydrated skin. Try using a toner and see if you can see a difference with how your moisturiser works on your skin. I can guarantee you it works. Everyone I’ve recommended changing their skincare routine by adding a toner has definitely found a difference!
So go on! Go get yourself a toner and see if it makes a difference! Let me know if it does! :)
Here’s a list of previous toners that I’ve used:
Elemis Soothing Apricot Toner £19.40 (Debenhams - currently with 10% off its £17.46!)
Vichy Purete Thermale £11 (Boots/Vichy/Online Websites) - My absolute favourite
Clinique Mild Clarifying Lotion £15.00 (Clinique/ Debenhams - currently with 10% off - £13.50)
Anne Semonin Marine Toner £37.00 (Online websites) - this was given to me as a gift but it smells amazing!
